Genealogy is NEVER Dull!

You can say a lot of things about genealogy, but one thing you can’t say is it’s dull! On the heels of my last post, where a distant great grandfather became a cousin several times removed, my DNA results from 2015 have also undergone some fairly significant changes. Thousands of new testers and hundreds of new regions accounted for the revisions.

My old results were these:  Great Britain – 46%     Ireland – 18%     Scandinavia – 12%     West. Europe – 12%
PLUS minor regions – Italy/Greece – 6%, East. Europe – 4%, Iberian Peninsula – <1%, and Caucasus – <1%.

New results: England/Wales/NW Europe – 47%     Germanic Europe – 30%     Ireland/Scotland -12%     Sweden – 11%
with minor regions now gone.

Quite a difference! Still processing, so comments will have to wait, for now.

What is a “Relationship” in Genealogy?

When a person studies their family history, they create a “relationship” with each person they find in their research. As would be expected, all of these people become your “relations” – father/mother, brother/sister, aunt/uncle, grandfather/grandmother and so on, even into the “greats”. The “relationship”, in short, determines HOW you are related to another person. Sometimes it’s handy to know how to describe your family relationships more exactly.

Genealogy.com describes more complex relationships for us:

  • “Cousin (a.k.a “first cousin”): Your first cousins are the people in your family who have two of the same grandparents as you. In other words, they are the children of your aunts and uncles.
  • Second Cousin: Your second cousins are the people in your family who have the same great-grandparents as you., but not the same grandparents.
  • Third, Fourth, and Fifth Cousins: Your third cousins have the same great-great-grandparents, fourth cousins have the same great-great-great-grandparents, and so on.
  • Removed: When the word “removed” is used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different generations. You and your first cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your grandparents), so the word “removed” is not used to describe your relationship.
  • The words “once removed” mean that there is a difference of one generation. For example, your mother’s first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother’s first cousin is one generation younger than your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your grandparents. This one-generation difference equals “once removed.” Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. You are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your grandmother’s first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.”

Got all that? There’s a chart that goes with this description, but it’s not important to the topic being discussed here. What I really want to talk about it is a problem I ran into with my relationships on Wikitree. I found the problem totally by accident, but I’m fairly sure how it happened.

I have several Scottish clans in my lineage, as does Cyndie. The one we obviously have in common is Murray; in fact, we share a 23rd Great Grandfather. That’s right – 23 generations back we had a common grandfather. He happened to have two sons. One became the Murray of Tullibardine that created Cyndie’s line, while the other was Murray of Bothwell, my line. On Wikitree – http://wikitree.com/wiki/Thomas-10705 – I have listings of each of the clans and how we relate over the generations. Now to the problem I found…..

At some point, someone on Wikitree made a profile change that affected the relationships of several generations. In one fell swoop, a 26th Great Grandfather (26 GGF) in the Murray line became a 2nd cousin 28x removed (2c 28x) and, suddenly, all my grandfathers and grandmothers down to the 15th generation were Murray COUSINS. Cyndie had no such problem with her Murray line because she is a Murray from the very beginning, where my lines branch and intersect at various points throughout history.

I’m afraid to check Cyndie’s other clan lines, but I checked mine and found the same thing had happened to most of them, as well. This is a problem that occurs when the ancestor’s profile is so old that anyone can add or delete information contained in it. Over a very short period of time, massive changes can occur.

When a person in one line is my 28 GGF, but his father is NOT my 29 GGF, there’s a problem. The solution? I’m not sure; I don’t have one for now, but I’m not going to change my relationships without some hard evidence there is an error in the lineage. I’ll continue to research, and continue to check the relationships I’ve found, but that’s about it. More later if an update is necessary.

Colorado Scottish Festival – Edgewater, Colorado, August 2018

The final festival of the year (probably) was the Colorado Scottish Festival, returning to the Denver area from Snowmass for the first time in several years. In all, nearly 50 clans took part. As usual, the best part was talking with visitors and discussing genealogy. After all, that is my job!

What still seems to attract most peoples’ attention is the map set up outside the tent. It also gives me an opportunity to start a conversation – Have you found your clan, yet? Can I help you find a family on the map? Do you know where your relative are from? – and so on. We also have several books and other reference materials we can look at for less common names. Most people really aren’t aware of their family history, and usually feel somewhat energized (at least for a while) to do some of their own research. How we deal with the public was honored at the Elizabeth Festival with a silver dish, named as the friendliest clan tent.

I said this was probably the final festival, but there is still a single-day program in Firestone in September, in honor of St. Bridget’s Day. St. Bridget was a contemporary of St. Patrick. We’ll decide later if we’re going to work or not. Now it’s back to the research, trying to develop new materials and insights for next year.

Bonnie Knees Contest – Elizabeth Celtic Festival

During a Bonnie Knees Contest, bribery of the judges seems to have an impact, more than one might expect. It was HOT outside, so the first bribe was ice cream, pistachio nut to be precise. That brought two of the judges around quickly, including Katie (blue skirt) and the Queen. As I was the only source of ice cream with nearly 30 contestants, the judges kept coming to my side of the circle. Another suitable bribe is a wee dram of Scotch whiskey, but it seems to be more fun and definitely more impressive, coming from a giant flask.

Below you see Katie presenting the Bonnie Knees Contest Winner, me, with the grand prize, an expensive bottle of Glenmorange Scotch. It was shared around a bit, but most of it went home with us for use at later festivals.

New Theme, New Look – Hope You Like It!

We hope you like the new look of the site. It seems to be more airy and less brooding than the dark blue we were using.

A few weeks ago, we worked at the second Celtic fair on the “circuit”, the Pikes Peak Celtic Faire in Colorado Springs. In only its sixth year, over 30 Clans participated, making it the largest ever for the event.

Using order levitra desensitizing condoms also delays ejaculation in men.
Setting up the booth is always the hardest part. Meeting and talking to the visitors is easy. We were able to share some high quality genealogical information, and even met a few cousins!

Next is the Elizabeth Celtic Fair in two weeks. Presented in a forested city park in the small town southeast of Denver, the Fair has an atmosphere totally different than that of a grassy area or a playing field. Next weekend is the Colorado Irish Festival, but Clan Murray doesn’t make a formal showing at the event.

Colorado Tartan Day Was A Great Success

We kicked off the “festival season” last weekend in Longmont, Colorado, at the Colorado Tartan Day Festival. Offered the second weekend of April, oftentimes the week after International Tartan Day, it is one of the few FREE events of the year. Many of the larger Clans were in attendance, along with the usual music, food, and history demonstations.

We took the RV up Friday afternoon in 30-50 mph winds and set up in the campground of the Boulder County Fairgrounds, located near the site of the Festival. The wind blew most of the evening and off and on the following day, Saturday, but Sunday was relatively quiet and sunny. Our youngest daughter and grandson attended both days with us, and our grandson got to overnight with us on Saturday. Our oldest daughter joined us on Sunday.
We hope to pass this letter along to as many people viagra on line pharmacy laugh on them and make fun of him and might disclose it in front of other friends of him. This was my first official festival as USA Genealogist for the Murray Clan Society of North America. I was amazed at the number of people beginning to look into their Scottish heritage, and also those who had studied their lineage already and were comfortable with history.

Next up is June for the Pikes Peak Celtic Festival, a fast-growing event in the state. We will take the RV again, staying in a campground just south of Colorado Springs in Fountain. July is the Elizabeth Celtic Festival southeast of Aurora, followed by the Colorado Scottish Festival in Edgewater, moved from Snowmass where it was held the last several years. A few smaller (or newer) festivals are sandwiched in the calendar these months, but we may not participate. In the Fall, the Longs Peak Festival is the “biggie,” but has not been a favorite of the Clans lately, so it is still up in the air also.

New DNA Results – 23andMe

We just took a 23andMe DNA test a few weeks ago and the results are in. Compared to the Ancestry test I took a few years ago, there are no real surprises, but there are some differences!

According to 23andMe, I am 100% European; in fact, primarily Northwestern European (91.6%). French and German is the highest, at 36.3%, with British and Irish coming in at second with 34.4%. Scandinavian accounts for only 3.4%, but “Broadly Northwestern European” comes in at a whopping 17.5%. In the previous test, English/Irish was the highest (64%), German/Western European was much lower (12%), and Scandinavian was three times higher (12%).

Southern European was 4.0% total, down from 6% in the first test, made up of Italian (1.7%), Iberian (0.8%) and Broadly Southern European at 1.5%. Eastern European came in at 1.9%, compared to 4% the first time, and Broadly European was 2.5%.

I’m not a DNA whiz, but this latest test confirms what I’ve always known: most of my ancestors came from Western Europe, Ireland and the UK. Trace amounts of other European ancestors aren’t so different that I can’t live with the numbers I see, and I can still document ancestors from those areas.

We’re waiting for a couple tests to come back, and one has to be re-done. Not enough spit, I guess. When all the results are in, we’ll do a comparison of each of the areas and see how closely they align.
