German Royalty

Germany - State created form the eastern half of the Carolingian Empire by the Treaty of Verdun of 843, continuing uninterrupted until 1806. The individual German states united as the German Empire in 1871.
Land mass varied over the years, but at one time or another included the following territories: Germany, Austria, Slovenia, the Low Countries, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Eastern France, Northern Italy, and Western Poland.

The Eastern Frankish Kingdom was the primary component of the Holy Roman Empire. The western part of the kingdom eventually became France.
The kingdom's leadership was not entirely hereditary - the king was elected by leading nobles of the realm until the mid 1300's. The Emperor was crowned by the Pope, and most were also King of the Lombards and King of Italy as a result.
