Since my last post, I’ve identified another seven members of royalty who signed the Magna Carta who are our ancestors. There was a second list of “illustrious people” of the time mentioned in the Magna Carta, and we are related to at least ten of those. The importance of these ancestors is that, in many cases but not all, their descendants became European royalty, members of the Puritan Migration to the Colonies from England, were important figures in the American Revolution, or in some other way influenced early American history.

One such family, for example, is the de Clare line of Magna Carta barons.  Two de Clares signed the document, after the family made a name for itself immigrating from France and Belgium. They are the progenitors of the Murray Clan in Scotland, later found in Ireland, and whose descendants eventually settled the Colonies in Pennsylvania. Others migrated to the south, progressively moving from North Carolina to South Carolina to what would become Alabama.

The past week or so has been an interesting one. First, I got more involved in a project on Wikitree I’ve been skirting for quite a while as I was doing other things. I found a list of Magna Carta Surety Barons and recognized some names. A quick check of my database yielded at least five Barons on a list of 25 names who were privy to the historical document. On another list of 16  distinguished persons named in the Preamble, I also recognized some names, but haven’t done anything with them, yet. The second project fell into my lap this morning, also from Wikitree. A gentleman asked on the forum if he could create a category of profiles of people involved with the Salem Witch Trials. Having four of the witches in my maternal lines, here, as well as the English Governor who presided over the process, I continued reading. Someone responded that two categories had been created. One was for “Accused Witches in New England” and another was for “Salem Witch Trials.” Only two of my ancestors are listed on the “Accused” list, and none are listed on the “Salem” list, so now I have some work to do. It will have to wait until after Christmas, though.

Just today, I spent quite a bit of time updating some of my profiles in Wikitree. When I originally uploaded files in a GEDCOM, the first and middle names of dozens of people went into the Wikitree database on the same line. Then, when the profile displayed, it left what was basically an error message when it couldn’t post a standard middle name.

Everything looks a little better now, except that middle names turned into middle initials, or didn’t show up at all. The latter problem may be confusing when several people had the same first name and surname, with the only difference being the middle name. Time will tell if it makes any difference.

Personally, I (Michael) link to Clan Gordon about 13 generations back on my mother’s side. As I follow Gordon ancestors further back, they intermarry and I also become part of Clan Murray. I also have maternal links to Clan McMahon from County Clare (probably!), Ireland, although little is known about them in Ireland. They came to the U.S. during the Irish Potato Famine in the early 1800’s, and far more information is available on this side of the ocean than where they came from.

Cyndie is from Clan Murray, but through various links can also identify ancestors in Clan Bruce, Clan Gunn, Clan Keith, and Clan Sutherland. We have followed Cyndie’s lineage back to when the Murrays were Norman knights who came from Belgium to fight in England in the 1oth Century, and stayed on as landowners, politicians and soldiers.
