Following a redivision of the kingdoms by 838, Louis "the Pious'" death in 840 caused a long civil war, ending with the Treaty of Verdun in 843. Lothair I kept Italy and Charles kept West Francia and Aquitaine, opposed by Pepin II, the son of Pepin I. Louis was given East Francia, except the Low Countries, Rhineland, Burgundy, and Provence, which became Middle Francia and were given to Lothair I. The Late Frankish Kingdoms are outlined here.
